Johnson opposes King County car-tab fee increase

Rep. Norm Johnson says a proposed $20 increase in car tab fees to pay for transit services in King County would be in defiance of voters’ wishes for no new taxes. Senate Bill 5457 would authorize a simple majority of King County Council members to impose up to an additional $20 for car tabs to help maintain Metro transit service.
Johnson, R-Yakima, said the measure should be put before the voters of King County to decide. The bill, which passed the House on Tuesday by a vote of 51-46, would raise an estimated $25.5 million for each of the two years the tax would be in place.
Johnson spoke against the measure during debate on the House floor.
