Governor signs Johnson bill creating specialized Seattle University license plates

Patrons and alumnus of Seattle University will have another way of showing support of their alma mater next year. Gov. Jay Inslee today signed legislation prime-sponsored by 14th District State Rep. Norm Johnson that will create a specialized Seattle University license plate. Proceeds of the license plate after costs will be directed toward scholarships to help students attending or planning to attend Seattle University.

Johnson said a constituent from Yakima suggested the bill.

“I thought it was a great idea because it gives the opportunity for people to show their support of Seattle University. Plus, it provides an additional boost for students in the form of scholarships. We all know how expensive tuition can be. So this is a win for the students, alums and supporters of Seattle University,” said Johnson, R-Yakima.

Specialty plates are currently offered for Washington State University, University of Washington, Western Washington University, Central Washington University, Eastern Washington University, The Evergreen State College, and Gonzaga University.

Under House Bill 2100, the Department of Licensing is authorized to create a special license plate that will display a symbol or artwork recognizing Seattle University. In addition to all fees and taxes required to be paid upon application for a vehicle registration, a fee of $40 will be charged for a Seattle University special license plate. A fee of $30 will be charged for renewal.

Seattle University is a private Jesuit Catholic school and the largest independent university in the Pacific Northwest, with more than 7,500 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs within eight schools.

The bill takes effect Jan. 1, 2015.
